A WARNING.
The great Christchurch fire is being used by various papers to point a moral. The water supply in the Cathedral City has been notoriously defective for years, and it was due to the-fact that it failed when needed that one of the finest blocks in Christchurch was reduced to brick walls and ashes. The cost of that fire, it is said, would have paid for an -adeauate water supply and the best appliances, possibly twice over. It is the old cry "Who'd 'a thought it!" when the damage is done. The lesson Christchurch has learned is one that applies to Masterton to-day. We have urged, almost ad nauseam, the importance of placing our water supply in an efficient state, but so far it has been an appeal to municipal ears deaf to all considerations beyond those which affect the notions of the borough authorities. The Council °eerns to have set its municipal mind upon a certain water pioject, and does not appear to be able to see that in ignoring a temporary expedient bearing upon that project it leaves the town in a state 6f great peril. The present safety of property should be considered before its prospective security.
