THE BRITISH NAVY.
ESTIMATES TOO HIGH. MEMBERS PLEDGED TO RETRENCHMENT. Received February 7, 10 a.m. LONDON, February 6. The Right Hon. H. H. Asquith (Chancellor of the Exchequer) objected to the Naval Estimates of Lord Tweedmouth (First Lord of the Admiralty) as too high, and the estimates were returned to the Admiralty for revision. Cabinet ha.-) appointed a committee to consider further retrenchments, especially in the Navy. One hundred and thirty Liberals are pledged to a reduction of armaments and am now pressing the Government to reduce the estimates. Through the estimates not yet being tabled a debate thereon yesterday had to be postponed, which was obviously inconvenient for the Government.
