LAWN TENNIS.

BUSHGROVE v. TE NUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) TE NUI, February 3. A tennis match between Bushgrove aid Te Nui was played at Te Nui Oft the Ist instant. The weather was perfect, and a large number of players and visitors were present. It was the general "afternoon tea day," so quite a number of ladies provided for the wants of the crowd. Bushgrove somewhat easily defeated the local contingent. The results are as follow: — Mrs A. J. Speedy and Miss Viol«t Groves beat Mis 3 Sutton and Miss Anne Perry, 6 —4, 6 —3. W. G. Groves and N. Groves beat G. Cox and W. H. Brooks, 6—4. 6—4. A. J. Speedy and H. Groves beat H. Sutton and Rev. J. H. Sykes, 3—6, 6—4, 6—3. The friends of Mr and Mrs D. 11. Speedy, of 'i'enui, will regret to hear that their infant daughter is lying seriousl} ill in Masterton.

A new method of date-stamping postal matter is now in use in Christ- \ church. The device was invented by Mr Robertson, Secretary of the ' Department. The cancelling machines at present installed at Christchurch (says a local, paper), are capable of dealing with five hundred letters a minute, but improved machines are shortly to be installed, which will be faster, and which will entirely preclude the possibility which at present exists of a date-stamp partially missing an envelope. The new machines will not inscribe a row of horizontal l>nes on the envelope, but its rotary die will hold date stamps, set more closely than on the old machines, so that most letters will be date stamped in two places, and no letter can possibly be missed altogether.
