LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The work of erecting the new police station at Carterton has been completed. Squires, the champion professional boxer of Australia, was defeated in a match against Flynn, at Los Angeles, in the sixth round. . Hares are unusually numerous in the Ashburton County. Quite recently a party of seven shot 100 hares on the Rangitata Plains in a few houro. The drovers in Masterton have formed a Union with a strong memberohip, and arrangements are being made to have the Union registered. The following are the latest dredging returns: —Hessey, 340z Bdwt, for 126 hours; Mystery Flat 660z 15dwt for 137 hours; Masterton 48oz 14dwc for 139 hours. Mr F. T. M. Kissel, B.Sc.E., Engineer to the Wairarapa South County Council, has consented to'\act as consulting engineer to the Carterton Borough Council, while the street improvement works are being carried out in that town. Mr G. R. Sykes, Secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association, while at the Feilding Show secured a large number of entries for the j Masterton Show. Among the exhi-! bitors will be Mr Jas. Bull; .the wellknown Feilding breeder of horses. All the spacs, both outside and covered, on the Show Grounds, has been booked by exhibitions for the approaching Masterton Show. The pressure of water registered on the gauge at the Central Fire Station fluctuated -yesterday between and 251b.- Whenever the water cart was being filled the pressure went down to 251b —a condition of affairs which is most unsatisfactory. The intake is cleaned out and the reservoir was stated last evening to be overflowing. Though the long spell of dry weather has baked up all the grass in the district, and given the countryside a monotonous brownish tint, the Masterton A. and P. Association are determined that the, Show Grounds shall present a fpsh appearance on Show Day. The creek at the bottom end of the grounds has been dammed, and with the water from this the whole of the arena has been flooded. In addition, the Jubilee Engine will be hired and water will be spread over the ' higher portions of the grounds between the gates and grandstands. By next week a green sward, such as prevails on the grounds after prolonged rain, should be the result. Commenting upon the recent fire on the Turakina, the "Shipping Gazette" says that it emphasises the need for what is known as a changing-house for wharf workers. They should, it is asserted, be compelled to work in clothes, provided/ for the purpose, without pockets, so that there would be no chance of matches being taken into the holds. Since flax bales have been fastened with wire there have been more fires among that class of cargo than when the bales were tied with their.own fibre. Matches might get in between the wires, and the movement of the ship and working of the cargo would set up sufficient friciion to ignite a wax match. Yesterday was observed as a holiday airong the tailoring establishments ivtho town, the occasion being the tailors' annual picnic, whish was held at "Willow Park," Opaki. The grounds were kindly lent for the occasion by Messrs Welch. Altogether about 150 person?, journeyed out to the chosen spot in drags and on bicycles. The day was ideal for the outing, which from every point of view proved highly successful and enjoyable. Lunch and tea was prepared by the ladies, and during the afternoon a programme of sports events were decided, and a number of games were arranged., The party did not return to town until shortly after dark. Appended are the results of the various races, the winner of each of which received a prize:—Apprentices' race —F. Ball; tailoress' race —Miss A. Ball 1, Miss Chard 2; employers'race—Mr A. E. Miles 1; ladies' race —Miss Dixon; tailors' handicap—J. McMahon 1, P. Barry 2; visitors' race—T. Jones 1; lady visitors' race —Miss K. O'Leary 1, Miss M. Ball 2. A Montreal paper contains the following statement by the Bishop of Elphin, Sligo, Ireland, with regard to the All-Red route*:—"The whole of the Irish members of Parliament are in favour of it. The House of Commons itself is practically unanimously in favour of it. We are strongly supported by members of the House of Lords. In fact, it amounts to this, that if Canada wants this fast All-Red line, she can have it. But there is one condition, and that is that Ireland shall receive a portion of the benefit by Blacksod Bay being made the terminus." The Bishop of Elphin and Mr C N. Armstrong, M.P., the representative of the consulting engineer?, form a deputation, who have gone to Canada Ito interview Sir Wilfrid Laurier and I other members of the Government on behalf of the Blacksod Bay scheme. The Bishop is an enthusiastic believer in the Blacksod Bay project.
