MERCHANTMEN'S CENSUS.
Little satisfaction ig to be derived by the patriotic reader from an official return, which was issued recently, of the seamen employed on British merchant vessels. The statistics given are in the nature of census, taken upon a given day, April 4tb, 1906, this being the fourth quinquennial census thus made. The comparative figures for trading vessels are shown below: —
The increase in the number of seamen in the past fifteen years, it will be observed, consists' mainly of foreign seamen, among whom Lascars bulk largely. The number of Lascars has risen by 17,103, and of foreign seamen by 11,022. The British, meanwhile, show the paltry rise of 510. The one slight consolation to be drawn is that in the last period of five years the decrease of British seamen has been arrested, and has given place to an appreciable increase.
Seamen. 1891. 1906. British ... 127,567 128,077 Foreign ... 45,206 73.331 Total ... 172.773 201.408
