THE PORTUGUESE ASSASSINATIONS.

MARTIAL LAW PROCLAIMED. REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT. INTENTION TO ESTABLISH A REPUBLIC.

As a result of the assassination of King Carlos and the Crown Prince, and the consequent unrest throughout the kingdom, martial law has been proclaimed here. Ninety-four prisoners have been exiled to Portuguese Africa. The paper El Mundo states that revolutionaries plans have been matured with absolute secrecy, and .directed by a republican editor, with the intention of establishing a republic withou*: bloodshed. Many officers and non-commission-ed officers were arrested at Badajoz. Further stores of arms and explosives have been discovered in Lisbon. The police killed many of those taking part in the attack on Senhor Franco's residence. Several newspapers report that Senhor Franco has l y eft Portugal as a precaution for his own safety.

Received February 5, 8.6 a.m. PARIS, February 4. Some Socialists in the French Chamber of Deputies submitted a resolution expressing republican sympathy for the Portuguese nation, and hoping for the establishment of a regime of liberty. ' The President of the Chamber refused to receive the resolution. M. Pinchon declared there was not a single Frenchman who could excuse the assassinations. M. Sembat, a Socialist deputy for Paris, shouted: "Franco iprovoked its murders!" Another Socialist declared that King Carlos mat with an accident incidental to his profession. This remark was received with cries of "Shame!"

In th 9 Senate the President an nounced that the Governor-General, at the request of the Ministers, had sent a cable to the Portuguese Royal Family in referer.ee to the assassinations in Portugal. Senator Stewart asked if the Governor had in the name of the people of Australia sent a message expressing abhorrence and indignation at the death of a King who had dissolved his Parliament, had usurped despotic power and taxed his subjects by decree. The President interjected that he could not allow such a question to be put. Senator Stewart endeavoured to speak, but the President checked him. Senator de Large asked the terms of the message. The President: "The terms are as follow: —That the people of Australia desire to express their deepest sympathy with the widowed Queen and abhorr«nce at the crime of last Saturday." Senator Stewart: "What right have you to express sympathy with the death of a monster like that." After seme disorder Senator Stewart managed to ask whether the Government would send a message of svmpathy in the name of the people of Australia to the'people of Portugal, whose rights had been grossly outraged. The President: "The Government had no such intention." Senator Stewart: "You are the friend of tyrants."
