WANTED—A SHORTHAND WRITER AND TYPIST.
UNPROCURABLE IN MASTERTON.
An advertisement, which .appeared in a Wellington paper some days ago, inviting applications for? a shorthandwriter ! and typist at the Masterton Borough Council's offices, was the subject of some comments at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening. Cr E wing ton said felt very strongly on the subject. Whoever was responsible for the advertisement had no right to go out of the town and advertise to fillssuch a position, until he was satisfied that the position could not be filled in Masterton. It was a reflection on the local youth, who should be given first opportunity when such positions were vacant. All, that was required by a youth in ( the Council offices was taught in the local schools, and he considered there were plenty of youths in the town well capable of filling the position. The Acting-Town Clerk said that if Cr Ewington; had heard his explanation before speaking, he ielt satisfied that he would not have made such remarks. Before advertising in the city paper he had made enquiries in the proper channels with a view to procuring a youth in the town, but his efforts had been unavailing. He had enquired from Mr W. {l. Jackson, headmaster of the District High School, and the Secretary of the Technical School, and the only persons that they oould feel justified in recommending-—six in number —were for various reasons totally unfit for the position. Be was anxious to do as Cr Ewington had stated and give the local youth a chance,' but in the face of Ids enquiries what else Was he to do but advertise in a Wellington paper? Cr Ewington, in reply, said that after hearing the Acting-Town Clerk on the subject he was not satisfied. Not by any means had all 'the channels in the town been exhausted where a suitable youth was likely to be obtained. He did not even know previously that there faas a vacancy in the uffice, but if there was, the best course he could suggest would be to advertise locally. He moved in. that direction. The motion was seconded, and after some further discussion on the lines of Cr Ewington's remarks, was unanimously agreed to. •
