The question of Tariff Reform played a very prominent part in the South Hereford election. Dr Macnamara, Parliamentary Secretary to the Local Government Board, speaking at Cambridge, said the fiscal issue had been put with much cunning, in attractive guise, and had deceived many voters. Possibly the country would have to go again through the fires of adversity i in order to appreciate free trade. I THE MADISON SQUARE MURDER. HOW THAW'S ACQUITTAL WAS RECEIVED. THE JUDGE'S REASONING. Received Februarv 4. 9.10 a.m. NEW YORK, February 4. There was vociferous applause in court when Thaw was Thaw smilingly bowed to the jury. Judge" Dowling, in committing lhaw to an asylum, said he must anticipate recurrent attacks of maniacal and suicidal insanity, as there was no proof that Thaw had made a permanent recovery. . (Thaw was acquitted on the ground that he was insane at the time he committed the murder. The Judge, deeming it dangerous to the public safety that , Thaw .should be discharged, ordered that he be confined in the Matteswan Asylum for an indefinite period). CAPE POLITICS. Mr Malan, Minister of Agriculture. Mr D. de Wall, Colonial Secretary: Mr Burton, Attorney-General.
