Tne Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, February Ist:—"The mutton market is dull and trade is very disappointing, there being only a hand-to-mouth demand. River Plate mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed for sale. The following are the current quotations: —Canterbury mutton, 3§..i par lb; North Island, 3£d; Australian, 2|d; River Plate, 3d per lb. There is a firm local demand for this season's New Zealand lamb. Canterbury brands are quoted at 6d per lb. The beef market is weak, and there id no change in prices to report. The butter market is very firm and excited on account of the falling off of receipts. There are more buyers thai? Bailers, and there is general confidence in the maintenance of present prices. Choicest New Zealand butter averaged 124s per cwt. during last week. The Tongariru butter, which ■will be delivered next week, has been j sold at 126s per cwf.; 128s per cwt. j is now asked. Australian butter is j quoted at 1225; Argentine, 120s; j Danish, 1275; and Siberian, at 117s . per cwt. ; The cheese market is quiet, with j a tendency in favour of buyers. ; "White makes are quoted at 59s 6d, j and coloured at 61s Gd per cwt. j The hemp market is dull and no immediate change is expected. The following are the current quotations: —Good fair grade, on the spot, £2B; fair grade, on the spot, £27; fair current Manila, £23 10s; January-j Mjfc'ch shipments, good fair grade, j £27 10s; fair grade", £26 15s; fair current Mariila, £2B. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet. Buyers are not keen to do business,: and there are light stocks on hand. ; Prices are firm, and .bright clean * dressed seed, 17lbs to the bushel, is quoted at 77s per cwt. I The wool market is firm for I merinos. Crossbreds are Jd lower than last quotations. j
