As a counterblast to the decision of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council to oppose immigration of any kind to the dominion, the "Wanganui Herald'' says:—"Unquestionably the dominion c<r.ild easily absorb many thousands more workers, male and female. We want labour. We want population. The domino:i could easily support several millions more people. Are adequate steps taken to attract that' population? We think not. There are millions at Home who would be delighted to better their conditions, which they would if they came to New Zealand. Hundreds of thousands are out of employment and on the verge of starvation at Home; and yet the pi'ogress of the dominion is retarded for the lack of that labour which the Mother Country can well afford to lose! Surely the matter is deserving of earnest inquiry."

On the subject of the proposal to increase the number of Cabinet Ministers, which we ckaifc with on Tuesday, the"iimaiu Herald" says:— "To our mind it would be better to relieve these overburdened gentleman by taking off their hands a lot of t!ie detail work with which it is the cjstom to load themselves at present, rather than by creating fresh Ministeral offices; and we fancy that the public will view with a certain amount of suspicion the Premier's revival of a fuggeslion which will no doubt be warmly received by some of his more ardent supporters in Parliament itself. Before either the country or Parliament assent to this application for assistance, it ought to be mada quite clear that the pressure is the result of legitimate demands upon members of the Cabinet in the discharge of their public duties. Less detail and less travelling make up the prescription we should offer for the complaint from which the Premier tells us the Cabinet is suffering."
