' TURF NOTES. (By "Zetland.") The Pahiatua meeting, to be held on Wednesday and Thursday next, is expected to be a pronounced success in every respect. For the eight events to be run on the .first day 87 acceptances have been received. A field of 15 may go out to contest the Cap, and this race should be well worth witnessing, inasmuch as the acceptors include such good performers as San Julie, Aeolus, Aberration, Narcotic, King'o Lynn, Sherlock Holmes, Lady Disdain, Saga, Sandix, Rosegrove, Signor and Rangihaeata. There is certainly plenty of material
here to make a very spirited contest. In the shorter events a number of * fine sprinters are engaged, and the Trial Plate will briny out some highly bred onps, including several previous non-starters. No less than 19 Wairarapa-owned horses will be sent up to the meeting, and it is understood that a very large number of the racing public of this district will be present on both days. With very capable stewards, an energetic secretary, and the positions of handicapper, judge an i starter filled by Messrs J. E. Henrys, W. H. Hartgill and H. Piper, respectively, the meeting should be one of the best yet held at Pahiatua. The Wellington' Cup has only been won twice by Wairarapa-bred and owned horses. In 1887 Pasha, by The Mute—Rose d' Amour, bred by the late Mr J. Vallance, of Kahumingi, scored in a good field. He ran in the name of Mr W. lorns, of Master ton. On Saturday last the race was won by Moloch, and it is somewhat of a coincidence that he should be very closely related to the winner, of the 1887 Cup. Moloch is by MauserListener, by The Mute—Rumour, by Tattler—Rose d'Amour. After racing with success in New Zealand, Pasha was sold to go to Australia, where he won the Wagga Wagga Cup. This week a liberal offer was made for Moloch, and if it had been accepted the Mauser gelding wa? to have accompanied a team of horses to Australia. Elevation will probably bo shipped to Australia on February 7th, to take part in the Newmarket and Doncaster Handicaps.
