MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) presiding. There were also present: Crs. J. H. Pauling, Jas. Elliott, A. Haughey, W. Morris, W. Pragnell, J. C. Evvington, J. Prentice and J. Yarn The Sanitary Inspector reported that two cases of consumption and one of scarlet fever had occurred in the borough since last meeting. One of the consumptive patients had died in, the fever hospital, and the necessary precautions had bsen taken to prevent a spread of the disease. Plans for the widening of Makora street, as prepared by Mr A. P. Rawson, ware referrsd to the Works Committee. Auctioneers' licenses were granted to Messrs J. B. Moodie, J. lorns, W. B. Chennells, M. 0. Aronsten, and J. G. Elliot.

Cr Pragnell moved to affirm the principle that an amount should be deducted from ths annual profits of the gasworks to recompense the Works Committee for the expense incurred in putting the streets of the borough in proper repair after they have been broken up by the Gas Committee for the laying down of mains. He considered that some of the streets in the borough were in a very bad state of disrepair due to the Gas Committeejjcutting them up, and it was time the Gas Committee's profits were taxed to some extent to pay for that damage. Cr Haughey seconded the motion, as he considered the principle a very desirable one. The Acting-Town Clerk explained that by a previous resolution of the Council all trenching on streets for gau mains had to be carried out with the approval of the Engineer, who Had power to see that the Gas Committee left the streets in the same state r.f.repair as they found them before breaking them up. The motion was withdrawn on the understanding that the Engineer exercised his powers as mentioned.
