CARTERTON.

/From Our-Own Correspondent.)

Monday. 'Considerable interest is being itaken in Carterton in connection with the proposal to borrow the sum of £4,500 for the purpose of repairing the streets of the borough. A : meeting will be held at the Borough Council Chambers to-mor- - row evening, when the ratepayers of the borough will be given an~opportunity of deciding as to whether or not the loan is to be procured. A number of th« ratepayers consider that the loan is not required, but in' view of the fact that the streets have been of late considerably disturbed installation of the water service, drainage and gas systems, it will probably take the whole of t'ne amount proposed to be borrowed, and perhaps more*, to put the streets in kood repair. At present the streets are not in keeping with the progress and importance of the borough. A VERY LIVELY CDRJSSE. "What the lamplighter Saw" u. the title of a good story io'd byi-he "Jfclbourne Age." A JjuopKgfcter, named Osborne, whilst on Iris rounds • about 5 o'clock a.m., had occasion to cross the dam in Marsden Street. When about midway his attention was arrested by the appearance of the body of a female in the water, close to the edge of the dam. To make sure he gave the object a poke w/i|h a stick which he carried for the' purpose of turning down the light in the strett lamps, and, being satisfied in his" own mind that a dreadful tra- . gedy bad taken place, hurried off with . all <Ji?spatch to the police station, a few jh'undred yards away, to report the matter. A short distance from the supposed body, on the side of the dam, pe had seen a woman's hat and -some clothing. In the course of a iew minutes the police were on the sj ot, along with the lamplighter, but no body could be seen, nor hat r.or clo%s. It took the police five hoirs to confirm the story. The "body" j was that of a young woman who was | merely taking an early morninj bath, . and, seeing the lamplighter approach- j ing, she lay dpwn in the water ftce downwards, and\rema»ned still so that she might not be observed. The piod y the ribs with the g is. man's stick ; rly made her "give the show away," but, as soon as the man with ' the stick had departed for the poll e station, she quietly got out of the , water, donned her clothes, and was • far away by the time ihe cmstalles . arrived on the scene with their grap pi ing irons. j
