Three miners named Bailey, Brown and Mac Donald, who have been entombed in the Alpha shaft at the Giroiox mine in Ely, Nevada, since December 4th, have been rescued. Air and food were supplied to them for 46 days through a six-inch pipe. When the men were brought to the surface they seemed well'and laughed and joked. At the National Liberal Club banquet, Mr Winston Churchiil, refei - - ring to his recent travels, said that he was astonished at the beauty, fertility, and resources of the countries that he had visited. He did not dispute the right of the Transvaal and Australia to make what arrangements they thought necessary in respect to Asiatic immigration. It was entirely within the authority deliberately conceded to them, and he hoped the nation and Parliament would honestly try to grasp the colonists point of view with regard to the matter and understand their difficulties. Mr Churchill suggested that the equatorial provinces of Africa might supply a compensating field for a colonizing enterprise of British Indians. CHINA AND ITAPAN. CONSTRUCTION OF A RAILWAY. The action of China in defiantly disregarding Japan's protests against the proposed Hsinminting-Takumen railway is causing surprise and indignation in Tokio. 1 Japan has made three protests, the last one just prior to China signing agreements with a British syndicate for the construction of the railway.
