PERSONAL.

I Major L'olton, who is retiring from? the position of officer commanding the No 2 Regiment of Mounted Rifles, is to be entertained by the officers of the Regiment at a dinner at Eketahuna cm February 12th.

The death occurred, on Wednesday night, at Picton, of Mrs A. Duncan, mother of Mr A. S. Duncan, of Featherston.

Mr George Thomas,, of, Dalefield,, has returned from an extended holiday in the Old Country.

Mr W. J. Walsh is at present! acting-postmaster at Cauterton, the* postmaster (Mr Brown) being on a. holiday in the South Island. Adjutant and Mrs Lord, who havebeen in charge of the local Salvation. Army Corps -tor the past fourteen months, have received notice of a. transfer to Devonport, Auckland,, and will leave for that place on Fridaynext. The Masterton corps will, im „ future, be in charge of Adjutant Gee and a Lieutenant, who will, arrivefrom New Plymouth during the week..

Dr J. A. Cowie has returned to Masterton and resumed the practiceof his profession.

Widespread regret was felt, on; Saturday morning, when it became known that Mrs F. W. Temple, one jof Masterton's most esteemed I ( ady ,' residents, had died rather suddenly j at Dr Archer Hosking's private hos- ! pital. The deceased lady entered the j hospital last Wednesday week, suffer- ! ing from an internal complaint, for , which she was operated upon on the following Saturday. She was makinggood progress towards recovery when death, due to heart failure, came unexpectedly. The late Mrs Temple was fifty years of age. and came to Masterton, with her husband, from. England, twenty-five years ago. A widower and four sons, one of whomis in Sydney, two in Wellington, and one in Master!on, are left to mourn their loss, and these will have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The funeral »-ill leave the residence, of Mr Tempi', Renall Street, this afternoon, at 4 o'clock.
