THE MARAINANGA BLOCK.

The Marainanga Estate, on the East Coast, just south of Cape Turnagain, was submitted to auction at Wellington, on Wednesday last, by Mes3"s Murray Roberts and Co., in conjunction with Messrs Abraham and Williams?, Ltd., on hshalf of Messrs Handyside. Roberts and Co. ' Mr O. C. Cooper was the auctioneer, and there was a large attendance of buyers. The estate consists of 36,600 acres, and wa« offered in 22 blocks, ranging from 580 to 4,722, acres. Thirteen blocks were sold aggregating 20,111 acres at prices varying from £2 15s to £lO 16s per acre. Nearly £IOO,OOO in cash was paid over by the various purchasers. The sale was held in the Town Hall, and the attendance was large, many interested persons coming from towns along both coasts, and others from the South Island. The sections sold, and the buyers, are as follow : Blocks 1, 2, and 3 (2.U73 acres), at £6 9s per acre, Mr A. J. Loxwood, Palmerston North. Block 4 (950 acres), at £lO 16s per acre, Mr R. Robertson, as agent. Block 5, (580 acres), r.t £7 15s per acre, Mr G. Carmichael, Pongaroa. Block 6 (1,020 acres), at £7 7s 6d per acre, Mr A. VcLean, Weber. Block 8, (1,673 acre..), at £2 15s per acre, Mr S. D. Thompson, Dannevirke. Block 12, (2.975 acres), at £2 15s per acre, Mr J. S. Handyside. Block 13 (3,450 acres), at £3 12s 6d per acre, Messrs Burling Bros., Pongaroa. Block 14 (945 acres), at £7 per acre, Mr W. E. C. Tylee, Makuri. Block J5 (980 acres), at £8 per acre, Messrs Burling Bros. Block 16 (635 acres), at £5 7s 6d per acre, Mr R. D. Cookson, Christchurch. Block 18 (3,930 ares), at £3 10s per acre, Mr F. Burling, Waione. The auctioneers state that they subsequently received several offers for sections, and the negotiations were proceeding for the balance of those unsold. The probability is that the whole would be sold.
