MAGISTRATE'S COURT RETURNS.
The annual return of the criminal cases recorded at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, during the past twelve months, shows that the number of persons apprehended was 713 (681 males and 32 females), as compared with 608 (578 males and 30 females) during the preceding year. The details of last year's cases are as follow:—Summary convictions, 383 males, 17 females; discharged, 94 males, 2 females; committed for trial, 17 males; number fined and paid the fines, 305 males, 13 females; imprisoned in lieu of fines,44 males, 1 female; imprisoned without the option of fine, 29 males, 37 females; number of whippings ordered, 4 males; orders made, including prohibition orders, 60 males, 80 females; convicted and discharged with caution, 125 males, 5 females; number of cases of drunkenness. 266 males, 7 females; assault, 18 males; theft, 40 males; vagrancy, 29 males, 5 females; obscene language, 19 males, 1 female; indecent behaviour, 8 males; prohibition orders, 49 males, 4 females; breaches of prohibition orders, 31 males, 2 females; lunacy, 9 males, 4 females; breaches of by-laws, 85 males, 3 females; breaches of the Shops and Factories Ac h s, 18 males. The amounts paid in fines aggregated £228 6s; criminal fees, £6l, (is; civil and licensing fees, £354. The amount sued for during the period was £6.777 15s 4d, and the amount recovered, £3,852 7s 7d.
