POLITICAL LABOUR LEAGUE.

Most of the newspapers of the domir i ion are more or less exercised ove : the activity of the Socialists in thi ; .country at the persent moment, an ; there is much hostile criticism upo the set forward at th recent conference ot the Politic? Labour League at Christchurch Their aims are generally held to b i extreme, and fears are entertained i '. some quarters that they may be abl j to exert a decided influence at th General Elections this year. Th 'Gkriatchurch "Press," in an editoru upon the subject, writes: —"Clearl the Socialistic idea of a New Zealan Utopia is to make it a paradise fo the drunkard, the vagabond, an loafer., who are to be kept in luxur by the hardworking portion of th community. Many of our reader will no doubt say that the resolu tions of the Political Labour Leagu are too absurd for serious consider atfon, and deserve only to b laughed at Let them bear in mind however, that a very serious attemp is being made by the Socialists ti carry their candidates at the nex General Election. Those who ar< opposed-to Socialism will make i great mistake if they treat it to( lightly, and only wake up to what i really means when the country i: folded in its deadly grasp." The "Press" takes, perhaps, to:, serious t view of the power of the new organisation, seeing that it has within itself the elements of discord. The danger of the advance of the Socialistic idea is more from within than without —from the Parliament as it is at present constituted rather than from any organisation such as the Political Labour League.
