Fires are still raging in the Mauriceville district, and large areas of grass are being burnt. The question of the arrears in connection with the cost of taking the poll for the Lansdowne Water Supply was again before the Master ton County Council yesterday. A motion was passed instructing the County Council's solicitor to proceed against all those guarantors of the poll who have not fulfilled their agreement. The membership of the Wairarapa Amateur Swimming Club is now over one hundred. II; was stated by Cr Murray, at the Master ton County Council meeting, yesterday, that an agitation was being made to "burst up" Akitio County, and that petitions were being circulated with the object of attaching Akitio to the Masterton County.

The fortnightly meeting of the Carterton RechabiteLodge was held in the •Rechabite Hall on Monday evening. There was a fair attendance of members present, and Mr W. Tucker, D.R., presided. The Masterton Friendly Societies' Council wpote •stating that the proposed picnic in connection with Friendly Societies' had been postponed, and that the members would be notified later of '■ the date on which the picnic will be held. Stevens; G., | Bro. Corrish: L., Bro. Mem wood; P.C.R., Bro. A. Petersen. A serious accident happened to W. J. Steven, an employee of Mr F. W. Groves, Tinui, on Saturday. He had just caught a horse, and was about t? bridle it when the animal struck out with its front feet, knocking the man down, and then trampling on him. Steven was unconscious when rescued from his perilous position. Owing to the absence of Dr. Dawson, Dr. Archer Hosking had to be sent for. Oar correspondent., writing on the 13th instant, states that Steven, who was getting on well at first, had taken a bad turn. He also mentionsthat Dr. Hosking has had to be sent for from Masterton durin* the past fortnight. The death occurred in the Masterton Hospital, yesterday morning, of Mrs T. Thompson, wife of Mr T. D. Thompson, of Masterton. Deceased was 65 years of age, and had been an inmate of the hospital for some time, suffering from phthSis. The funeral will leave her husband's residence in Colombo road on Thursday afternoon. The fourth annual sports meeting of the Whareama Sports Society will be held on the Langdale Domain on Friday next. The programme shows twenty-eight events, beside othe; s which will be arranged 011 the ground for the youngsters. Liberal cash prizes and several gold medals ha\ e been provided, and provision has been made for every attention being pa:d. to visitors.
