ENGINEER'S REPORT.
. The following report from the • County Engineer was adopted at the meeting of the Council yesterday Opaki Ridin*. Opaki District Road, Contract No. 124. —113.6 chains of formation and metalling. Sixty-six chains of metal has been laid and the formation partially completed. Opaki Loop Line, Contract No. 14?. —l6 chains of formation—let at lait meeting - has been abandoned by the contractor. —Resolved that the contractor be given seven days notice to proceed with the contract. Matahiwi Road. —The widening cf the narrow, portions through the buih has been completed. Wainuioru Riding. Weraiti - Brancepeth Road, Contracts Nos. 109 and 110. —30 and 50 chains of formation, respectively, are now satisfactorily finished. A contract for the erection of two 25 feet span bridges has been let to C. E. Daniell, and the work is now in progx*ess. East Coast Road, Contracts Nor. 125 and 136.—Building two bridge,", 65 feet and 50 feet respectively. The contractors have been notif e 1 to proceed immediately with the construction of the above. The timber for the 65 feet span, over the Patanui stream, is reported to be delivered on the site, while the timber for the 50 feet span, over the Mutuwaiieka stream, is at the Masterton station ready to be conveyed to the site. Contract No.' 137. —Beaumsur 3 Flat to Mutuwaireka —129 chairs ol : metalling. The contractors on tbo e work have considerably strengthened "their tcans, and are now making better headway; about sixty chains length of metal was laid on my last visit of inspection on the 9th inst. Contract No. 139. —Beaumaris Flit. —67 chains of formation arid metalling. The formation, which is of a heavy character (54 feet wide), is well on towards completion. The contractor expects to start metallirg this week. Contract No. 140.-Beaumont to Mai,gapehu Section.—l 44 chains of metalling. Approximately half of the metal has been laid; there is difficulty experienced in getting a uniform quality delivered. As agreed by a committee of settlers appointed to confer with the Engineer, I am preparing plans for the bridging of thrwaterways on the Beaumaris Flat, and the erection of a 6ft x 6ft culver t at Twisty Creek, to be constructed forthwith. Metal repairs are being conducted by the roadman on the BlairlogieKohiwai Section. The teams are provided by the settlers at a nominal rate. Mastertun-Waimata Road.—l ngret to report the failure of a line ol" two feet pipe under the pressure of :i - thirteen feet embankment, about mile 7, on above road: I deemed it urgent to have a culvert watt rw y substituted,and the work is row being carried out. As no tenders were received for Contract No. 146—1,790 cubic jard ■of metal for repairs—l have readver tised the contract. Alfredton Riding. Alfredton-Weber Road, TawatairAlfredton Section, Contratct No. 142 —delivering 1,125 cubic yards of m^tal.—This contract isexpectel to be completed early this week. Contract No. 148 —133 chains of metalling, etc., let to M. Kerins sin 'e last meeting, has not yet been commenced, but the contractor informs me that he will start immediately. Contract No. 149.—76 chains of metalling was let since last meeting, ■and metalling operations were commenced on the 10th inst. Contract No. 151. —89J : chains of metalling (Saunder's Flat) was commenced on the sth inst., and fair progress had since been n;a:le with the contract. The river from which the metal is being taken at present is exceptionally low and facilitates progress. Contract No. 150. —Bl chains of metalling has been again advertised, to close on the 18th inst. 1 am sorry to have to report that on Saturday morning the Public Pound at Alfredton was totally burned. From information gathered, the act appears to have been perpetrated by an incendiary. Rangiluirau Riding. Wangaehu Road, Contract No. 144. —SO chains of metalling was started last week. Contracts No. 145. —SI chains of metalling has not yet been started; the contractor is at present finishing work in the Alfredton district. Te Whiti Riding. Robieson's Road, Contract No. 147. is well advanced; a length of about forty chains of metal has been laid. Willow Nuisance.—Very few are complying with the notices circulated in respect to clearing the wiliow growth in the streams; as the season advances the work necessarily becomes heavy,, the material having to be carried away beyond Hood level.— It was resolved that the Council take steps itself to abate the nuisance and charge the property-owners with the cost.
