The "Poverty Bay Heiralld," '©E 30th inst., contains the following::— "An announcement that wall ibe received with sincere regret by many in the community is made .in .our obituary colrmn, to-day, Mrs Miller, wife of Mr W. Miller, stock inspector, having passed away at her residence, Childers Road, this morning. The deceased lady, who had been ailing for but a few weeks, was a comparatively recent arrival in Gisborne, but her amiable qualities had attracted to her a wide circle of friends, who will greatly deplore her deaiise, and sincere condolence with Mr Miller "and family in their bereavement." The deceased lady was the mother of Mrs F. G. Wayne, of Masterton, and a sister of Mrs C. H. Cormack, of Carterton. Mr G. Laing-Meason, C.E., paid a visit to Masterton yesterday in connection with the preparation of his report on the proposed extension of the water supply and daaanage of the borough. Mr W. H. Allsworth, a wellknown resident of Masterton of many years' standing, died yesterday afternoon, after a long illness. Deceased was 64 years of age, and leaves a wife and six children. The funeral uvill leave his late residence in Makora road, on Thursday afternoon. A very pleasing little function rtook place in the County. CAerk s ■office, yesterday afternoon, at the •conclusion of the business of the iCounty Council. The ex-chairman, Cr C. E. Cockburr.-Hood, who tendered his resignation, vesferday as,a councillor, being about to leave on a trip to England, was acordej an informal send off by his fellow councillors, and his health was toasted in champagne. The County Chairman, Cr W. J. Welch, made a speech, in which he referred to the excellent services rendered by the guest to the Council during a long and very active term of office. Other councillors added, their tribute in very feeling term?, the County Clerk, Mr F. G. j Moore, also referred to the esteem j in which his late chiof was held by the staff. The compnay sang "For He's a Jol>y Good Fellow," and gave three hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs Cock burn-Hood. The ex-chairman made a characteristic speech in reply, thanking the various speakers for their cordial wishes, and expressing a fervent hope that he would soon be found back among them again serving the County's interests.
