HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT,
BY TELEGRAPH —PKESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, January 13. The High Commissioner cabled as follows from London, under date January 11th:—The mutton market looks very weak. There are a number of sellers, but buyers are not inclined to make forward purchases at the present prices. Current quotations are : —Canterbury, 3gd; North Island, 3Jd; Australian, 21d; River Plate, 3d. Australian lamb is in large supply, but of inferior quality. Stocks are accumulating. Australian brands are quoted at 5Jd to 5Jd. The beef market is dull, supplies •of American chilled beef being largo and cheap. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3|d, and forequarters at 2|d. The butter market is very firm, the demand being greater than the supply, especially for second-class quality for the shilling trade. There is every prospect of the high prices continuing for some time. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 119s; Australian, 116s; Danish, 1255; Siberian, 112s; Argentine, 117s. Saltless butter is quoted at 2s less than the above. The cheese market is very firm, with a much better demand, and the pro&pects are favourable. New Zealand cheese is giving satisfaction to buyers. Coloured makes are bringing 645, and white G2s per owt. There are signs of an improvement in the hemp market, and a fair amount of business is being done. The following are the current quotations :—Good fair grade on the spot, £29; fair grade, on the spot, £2B; fair current Manila, on the spot £29 10s; January - March shipments, . good fair grade, £2B 10s; fair grade, £27 10s; fair current Manila, £3O. The cocksfoot seed market is very firm, and there is no change in pricts to report. The shipments of River Plate meat up to December 31st are:—Mutton, London 104,198, Liverpool 108,362, Hull 17,871, Southampton 1,100, •Cardiff 12,477, Newcastle 9,390, Plymouth 1,357; lamb, .London 224, Liverpool 3,356, Hull 584, Southampton nil, Cardiff 300. The wool market is. quiet but firm. The following are the crurent quotations for Bradford tops:—36's, low •crossbreds, Is Id; 40's, low crossbreds, Is l|d; 44's, medium crossbreds, Is 2Jd; 50's, half-breds, Is 7jd; 56's, quarter-breds, Is 10kl; 60's, merinos, 2s 2d.
