INDIANS IN THE TRANSVAAL.
REFUSE TO QUIT. AND ARE IMPRISONED AND FINED. Received January 12, 4.29 p.m. PRETORIA, January 11. Seven Indians have been sentenced at Pretoria to three months' imprisonment for disobeying the magistrate's order to quit the Tranvaal. The defendants, in addition, were fined £IOO. - Three others were ordered to pay £SO, failing payment of which each, will be imprisoned for a further three months. Four of these Indians had had a large local business connection with Mr Ghandi, a prominent Indian barrister, who was recently arrested for advocating passive resistance to the registration law. Five other Indians were sentenced to two months' imprisonment without hard labour for having defied the law. At the close of the Court proceedings a procession of Indians marched through the streets of Johannesburg, carrying black flags.
