BRITISH AND FOREIGN TRADE.
I REPORT OF BOARD OF TRADE COMMITTEE. Received January 10, 10.23 p.m. LONDON, January 10. The Board of Trade's Advisory Committee, basing its conclusions chiefly on Mr R. J. Jeffray's report, states that it is a serious mistake to under-estimate the extent of foreign competition with New Zealand or its possible expansion. Although British manufacturers may contemplate the present position with some satisfaction they cannot afford to relax vigilance or to be lulled by a feeling of security by the preferential tariff. The United Kingdom might supply a few classes of goods at present almost entirely held by foreign traders, but excepting certain American, French, German and Belgian specialities, most of the other foreign goods are cheap lines, which British manufacturers considered unimportant. The committee considers that with reasonable vigilance, attention to the desires and prejudices of consumers, British traders should maintain and even improve their position.
