RESULT OF A QUARREL.

BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION - . AUCKLAND, January 8. . A tragedy is reported from Kaukapakapa, and particulars to hand show that it was the result of a gumdiggers' quarrel. Win: Stuart, a man about 60 years of age, killed Edward West, aged 45, by striking him with an axe. A cut was inflicted on the left side of West's skull, and was about five inches long by four inches deep. Accused, in a statement to the constable, said he and West were in a whare.. He (Stuart) had an axe in his hand, and was chopping wood. West saw some gum in* the whare, and said: "You , you did not^ scrape all your gum." "In a moment," said accused, "I chopped him on the head. I saw his eyes opening and shutting, and knew that he was dead."
