A Novel Contest.

FEILDING, January 8. A novel contest with Feilding as the finishing point took place to-day. Taylor, of Wanganui, left that place on "a bicycle, and Lawrence, an oldtime runner, of Marton, left that place, each at 2 o'clock, the latter on foot. The match was for £lO aside, and a £5 donation. Great interest was taken in the event, and a large number of people awaited the arrival of the contestants. Taylor, who had to come 44 miles, arrived first just on 5 o'clock, having passed Lawrence one and a-half miles from the winning post. Taylor lost 40 minutes mending punctures in the tyres of his bicycle."
