HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT.

BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, January 6. The High Commissioner cabled from London, under date January 4th: — New Zealand mutton is very limited in supply, but the market is weak and inactive, as there are large supplies of River Plate mutton, which is being strongly pushed for sale at 3d. No immediate change in the market is expected. The current quotations are: Canterbury, 3£d; North Island, 3|d; Australian, 21d. Australian lamb is in large supply, but is of very mixed quality, and is quoted at 4|d. There is a good demand for prime quality lamb. The beef market remains very flat, and supplies of River Plate are heavy. New Zealand is quoted at 3§d for hindquarters and 2|d for forequarters. The butter market remains firm, and there is a general active demand. Light shipments are expected. Choicest New Zealand is quoted at 119s; Australian, 116s; Argentine, 117s; Danish, 1245; and Siberian, 112s. I. The cheese market remains firm, with an upward tendency. White make is quoted at 61s; coloured, 62s per cwt. 2 The hemp market is steady, but the market prospects are uncertain, and transactions are moderate. Good fair grade on the spot is quoted at £2B 10s; fair grade, in the same position, £27 10s. January-March shipments, good fair grade, £27 10s; fair grade, £27; fair current Manila, £29 per ton. The cocksfoot seed market is very firm, and no immediate change is expected. There are light stocks on hand and the quotation is 76s per cwt for 171b bright dressed seed. There is a better demand for wool, and prices are firm.
