THE HAMPSHIRE TRAGEDY
A MADMAN'S ACT. DEATH OF ONE OF HIS VICTIMS. Received January 6, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, January 6. It transpires that prior to the shooting of his former wife's mother, a solicitor, and himself, Major Coates Phillips asked his wife to re-marry him, but she refused. At an inquest touching the death of Major Phillips, a verdict to the effect that he committed suicide whilst suffering from temporay insanity was returned. The mother of Major Phillips's former wife has succumbed to her injuries. (Major Henry Coates Phillips entered the residence at Cockham, in Hampshie, of his wife, from whom he was recently divorced. He fired one shot at her, but she fled in safety. The major then shot his wife's mother and a solicitor named Smith, who was present, inflicting serious wounds on both, and aftewards committed suicide.)
