WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

ANNUAL SPORTS. The thirty-second annual sports gathering of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on the Mas- I terton Showground yesterday, and , passed off very successfully. In I former years the Society has held its gathering at the Park —undoubtedly a popular sports ground —but this year the Showground was chosen for various reasons, and, contrary to expectations, the transference did not materially alter the receipts or the attendance. There were nearly six thousand people present, the amounts taken at the gates and grandstand, respectively being £163 Is 6d and £43 ISs 6d. Last year's figures were: —Gates £196, grandstand £2l 7s. The day's sport proved very enjoyable, though the weather was somewhat uncomfortably warm. All the events were got off expeditiously, several of- the items on the programme going off simultaneously in the ring. With plenty of grandstand accommodation and the natural eleva-, tion of the grounds outside the ring, the spectators were given an uninterrupted view of the proceedings. The running was very interesting, and the finishes were keenly fought out. This was particularly the case in the Sheffield Handicap, the principal running event of the day, which was won by the narrow margin of two feet. The wood-chopping and sawing was one of the main features of interest. In all of these events, the competitors completed their task in good tim.'S, and very little separated the placed men at the finish. During the day a private chopping match took place between D. John' ston and J. Watling, both of Dannevirke, for a side wager of £2O. This was won by the latter after a contest which was considered to be one of the best during the day. In the high jump and vaulting the bar, splendid exhibitions were given by the competitors. Both events were won only after prolonged contests. The arrangements for the meeting were admirably carried out by an energetic body of officers, headed .by the secretary (Mr J. B. Emrnett), who worked untiringly to see that not the slightest detail was overlooked. The Master ton Municipal Brass Band were present during the day and did much to add to the enjoyableness of the outing- An excellent luncheon was prepared by Mr E. Pelling. The results were as follow Maiden Race, Flat, 220 yards~ L. Thompson 1, C. Hutton 2. Quoits Handicap—J. Nicholson, 4 points, 1; H. Chamberlain, 3 points, 2; R. Tankersley, 1 from scratch, 3.
