WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

* ANNUAL SPOfiTS MEETING.

The Wairarapa Caledonian Society will hold its thirty-second annual gathering on the, Masterton Showgrounds on January Ist, and present indications point to the sports being even more successful than any of the Society's previous gatherings. All branches of athletics, field events, wood-chopping and sawing, Scottish dancing and piping competitions have been well catered for by the Society's who have this year placed on tMprogramme no less a sum than £254 'fend nine gold medals of the value of over £2O. This splendid prize list has had the efftct of filling the handicap events with performers of a very high order, and the public will have an opportunity of witnessing the performances of some of the best athletes and dancers in the dominion. The chopping and sawing events have attracted a considerable number of the best known and most expert axemen, and their work should be worth going a long way to witness. These brawny giants are in their element when, with axes keen as razors, they devote their energies to rolling out chips almost equalling in size the latest edition of Webster's unabridged dictionary, or driving their well-kept seven-feet saws through' logs six feet four inches in circumference with as much ease as the average grocer experiences in slicing off a pound of cheese. In fact, their work has now become an art, and only the most expert among them enter the competitive lists. The growing need of a more spacious and convenient ground on which to hold its annual festival has compelled the Society to avail itself.of the Masterton Showgrounds, right in the heart of the town and possessing every facility for the good conduct of a public gathering at which the of all and sundry must be catered for to ensure success. Train arrangements have been made which will allow of residents in any part of the Wellington and Hawke's Bay provinces attending the sports and returning to their homes on the same da« r r CONCERT. In the evening a Scotch concert will be held in the Town Hall. In oast years the Society has always en3>yed the support of a large number of patrons at its conceit, chiefly by season of the splendid programme provided. This year's programme'is no exception. All the items have been carefully selected, and a number of prominent vocalists have been engaged. A full house is confidently anticipated.
