SAD BATHING ACCIDENT.
A WOMAN AND TWO GIRLS DROWNED. HEROIC ATTEMPTS AT RESCUE. BY TELKGBAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. BLENHEIM, December 29. A distressing bathing accident occurred yesterday afternoon, by which Mrs Arthur Farmer, 37 years of age, her daughter Rona (17) and Zita Shaw (12) lost their lives. A party of ladies and children were bathing in the Opawa River, outside the town when Zita Shaw was carried off her feet and Mrs and Miss Farmer went to her assistance, but were also carried away. Zita Shaw's mother, a good swimmer, made heroic attempts at rescue, and almost succeeded with her daughter, and after failing with her she attended to Mrs Farmer, but unsuccessfully. Mrs Shaw then tried to recover the bodies by diving, but was unsuccessful. Shortly after they were recovered by some men, who arrived after the alarm had been given. • Lengthy efforts at resuscitation failed. At the inquest, to-day, a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned.
Mrs Shaw's bravery and the prompt action of the men and the police were commended by the jury, who were also of the opinion that the Council should provide proper swimming baths.
The funeral of the three victims took place this afternoon.
