SURF BATHING.
SEVERAL LIVES LOST.
A GALLANT RESCUE. SYDNEY, December 28. Several lives have been lost during the holidays while surf bathing along the coast. The undertow is particularly dangerous at Newcastle. Two nurses at the Newcastle Hospital, named Quayle and Bertram, were carried away. A man named Martin gallantly brought both ashore, but Miss Quayle was dead.
Miss Bertram is in a critical condition, and is unlikely to recover. Two men were almost lost in a similar way at the same spot an hour later, but were rescued in a state of collapse.
