CRICKET NOTES.
(By Cover Point.) The match between the Masterton Thursday reps and the Wellington Wednesday reps, played on Christmas and Boxing Days, resulted in a win for Masterton by two wickets and three runs. Wellington won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that was rather soft after the rain in the forenoon. The visitors were at the wickets for about two and a-half hours, and compiled 161 runs. McGill was the principal scorer with 62 not out.< He went in third wicket down and played out the innings. He gave a fine display of cricket, and his score included f nine fourers. Wilkinson and A. Moore with 27 each, were the other batsmen •| who were mainly responsble for their side's score. Hoar was the most successful bowler, taking five wickets for 51 runs. This bowler dismissed two men with consecutive balls. ' Masterton followed on about half an hour before time on the first day, and when two wickets were down for 33, play was adjourned until the following morning, when the innings • was resumed, and the score was carried to 113 before the team was dismissed. Crookeuden put on 14 by pretty cricket, his .score including a sixer. Hall notched 20 in quite a different style. He was bver-cautiuus and allowed a lot of "off stuff" to pass, while other batsmen scored freely off it. J. O'Leary accounted for 34, Which he made by dashing cricket. His strokes all round the wicket were good. Included in his total were boundary hits. McGill, the visitors' fast bowler, took six wickets for 54 runs. Wellington's second effort produced 122. Little (37) and A. Moore (23) ware the principal scorers. The only other players to reach double figures were Cook (15) and McGill (13). Waters, who had been unsuccessful as a bowler in the first innings, bowled splendidly on this occasion, his four wickets costing him only 21 runs. Requiring 171 runs to win, Masterton opened their second innings at 3 o'clock, with Crookenden and Hall. The latter had a short life, as McGill's third ball cleaned bowled him. Edwards joined Crookenden, and some interesting cricket ensued. Edwards played somewhat steadily, while | Crookenden, who had collared the " the bowling, hit freely, and the score was carrie-1 to 20 before Edwards succumbed to McKenzie, after compiling 11. With N. Boyd as his partner, Crookenden "went at" fie bowling, and played some pretty strokes. It looked as though he were set. for the afternoon unti', when the total stood at 69, he played a low one in'the slips to McGill, who brought off a splendid catch. The retiringbatsman had made 43. His score included six fourers. Welch played a few balls and was then clean bowled by Littie without scoring. The same bowler accounted for N. Boyd, who had made 19. by very careful cricket. With the total at 83, J. O'Leary, after making two,' played back'to Little, and his stumps were scattered. C. Perry and L. Boyd became associated, and 90 appeared on the board as the result of an hour and a-halfs play. When two more had heen added to the total, Little, who was bowling ' a fine length, found Boyd's weak spot, and the latter retired with five opposite his name. When Hoar joined Perry, the spectators were treated ■to some lively cricket. Both players batted freely, .and the 'score mounted rapidly, boundary hits being plentiful. With the score at 170, only one short of the number required to win, Hoar was caught by W. Moore, afte'* compiling 43, rr.ade by dashing cricket. The retiring batsman, whose score included five fourers, received' an ovation on returning to the pavilion. Waters went in, and the necessary runs were obtained without the loss of any further wickets. Perry wa3 not out with 37 compiled by good cricket.
