HELD FOR RANSOM.
A MISSING CHINESE. GISBORNE, December 27. Some time ago it was reported that Howchow, a wealthy Chinaman, had left Gisb'orne on a visit to China, and had disappeared. It was believed he had been captured by bandits, and his wife, a European woman, went to China and made an unsuccessful search for him. News has now been received from Howchow at Hongkong, stating that he had been held for a year for ransom, but is now free.
