"DR BILL."

As a fitting termination to the holiday, a large crowd visited the Town Hall, last evening, to witness the production of the farcical comedy "Dr. Bill," by the Wellington Dramatic Society. The company, it must be remarked at the outset, is comprised of amateurs, but the performance was in every way a successful one. "Dr. Bill" is a good type of comedy, and mainly depends for its success on all the characters misunderstanding each other. Consequently there are many amusing situations. Every member of the company rose to the occasion, and gave a performance that was in some cases up to a high professional standard. Miss Mollie Marshall's Mrs Horton, wife of the jealous inspector of police, was an excellent characterisation. Miss Gnrney made a fine mother-in-law, and caused a good deal of merriment, notably in her fit of hysterics in the second act. Miss M. Bedford, as the wife of "Dr. Bill," admirably enacted the part of the newly-married wife, who had every faith in her husband despite the machinations of Mrs Horton. Miss E. Gurney as Jennie Firman acted her part very well, and Miss Lena Lennox, as the maid, displayed good talent in her part. Miss Myrtle Phelp was admirable as the ballet dancer. As "Dr. Bill," Mr H. P. Wood was free and easy. He spoke his lines well, and his movements were facile. Mr Norman Aitken as Mr Firman was the life of the piece. He took full advantage of every opportunity given him to make the play go with a pwing. Another fine I charactpr was that of the "dude" by Mr J. Millar. Mr Denis Kelly made a capital Inspector of Police, and Mr Edward Scotc made an admirable butler. The staging and dressing of the 1 piece were all that could be desired.
