TURF NOTES. ("By Zetland.") Mr H. McManaway's two horses, Mahuta and Projectile, are doing good work at Ellerslie, in view of the Auckland Cup and Nursery Handicap. It now appears that it was a conference of bookmakers in Christchurch, not the Racing Conference, that was in favour of bookmakers being admitted to racecourses at fees ranging from £5 to £2O. There is a very wide difference in the ideas of the. two bodies, and the Racing Conference is not likely to be so lenient in the matter of fees as the Bookmakers' Conference would wish. Silken Rein has arrived in Wairarapa from Blenheim, and will take part in the Lower Valley and Wairarapa meetings. The weights for the Wairarapa meeting were published on Tuesday. Tiiey appear to have been framed on an equitable basis, and should result in numerous acceptances being received. During the New Zealand Cup week new owners were found for Armamaiito, St. Joe and Sir Artegal. They a'l scored the other day at the Christchurch meeting, and thus quickly earned a goodly portion of the purchase money. The detrimental effect on small clubs, consequent upon the Gaming and Lotteries Act being brought into effect, was plainly emphasised at the Masterton Trotting meeting on Thursday. Only £522 went through the totalisator, against £1,787 last year. Under ordinary circumstances over £2,000 would have been invested yesterday, so the difference to the Club can be reckoned at about £l3O. Against this, license fees were received from two bookmakers, leaving a clear loss of revenue amounting to over £IOO. As I have previously contended, it i 3 evident that many of the smaller clubs in the dominion will not be able to withstand the losses occasioned by the passing of the Gaming Act, and the result will be that many districts will find their once annual gatherings discontinued. Whether the public will allow this and remain silent remains to be seen.
