Sufficient information has been obtained respecting the discovery of coal deposits at Mauriceville to warrant interest being taken in the master by the people of Masterton though the amount of prospecting done has as yet been too incomplete to justify any excitement on the subject of the discovery. Those specially concerned in the Mauricevilio venture are adopting the right course in securing expert advice on the merits of the find, but it appears "to us that it would be well if the owners of the property were to obtain an official report from the Mines Department. A favourable report bearing the signature of a competent State expert would materially aid in any further development scheme, as it wou'd establish a confidence in capitalistic circles which nothing else would do. We sincerely trust that Mr Rummer's find will prove all that he and his ■friends hope for it, for a payable coal-mine in such a locality would
be of great boon to the Wairarapa district in a variety of ways? Mr J. Hayes, late Inspecting Engineer to the Mines Department, who, we understand, is spending a holiday at Mr Kummer's residence, has lately made an inspection of ' the property, but is not prepared as yet to express an opinion on the merits of the discovery. As soon as the Masterton public are assured that coal of good quality and in payable quantity is in the neighbourhood they will doubtless be eager to assist in the work of development by providing sufficient capital.
