THE NEW HOSPITAL.
SOME DEFECTS POINTED OUT. INSPECTOR-GENERAL INSISTS ' UPON ALTERATIONS. At the meeting of the Masterton Hosptia'l Trustees yesterday morning, the following letter was received from Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals:--"I have tiia honour to inform you that on December 3rd 1 inspected the new Masterton Hospital, and I regret to say that I am far from satisfied with the internal drainage arrangements at that institution, though there is nothing I can take exception to from a sanitary point of view. I am, however, 6f opinion that such arrangements might have been installed in a much more sightly manner e.g., the discharge outlets should have been brought down very much lower towards the traps as it is, there is a long interval between the exit sides and the trails, which is unsightly, and not economical. I must ask your Trustees to insist on ventilation of the soil and waste piper, being carried out in accordance with the Wellington Corporation by-laws, as specified in the contract. I have seen Mr Crichton, of Grichton and McKay, architects, concerning the abive matters, and he assures me that is not in any way responsible for the drainage, arrangements, as they were taken out of his hands by the Trustees and placed in the charge of the foreman of works. I have pointed out one or two small improvements to the Clerk of Works and Mr Dobson, wbi:h might be made, in regard to the operating theatre, and I hope th« Trustees will give efi'eet to the same."
The Chairman (Mr A. W. Hogg, M.l'.) stated that proper measures had already been taken to have the complaints mentioned in the letter attended to.
