THE ALL RED ROUTE.
COMMENT BY "THE TIMES."
Received December 18, 10 p.m
LONDON, December 18
"The Times" hopes that in the interests of the All Red route, the projected negotiations of the Commonwealth with Ottawa will be conducted in a sufficiently liberal spirit to remove any temporary ill feeling, which Mr Deakin's tariff policy has excited. Official circles in Canada are proceeding to discuss the All Red route.
The Times estimates that the total annual subsidy for some years would be £700,000 to £BOO,OOO or more nearly one-half of which would be Great Britain s contribution. It is calculated that the building of the fleet would cost six millions. The amount would not be raised at low interest without engaging the British Government's credit. All these difficulties were mere detail, and would probably be overcome by goodwill. "The Times" emphasises the fact that the Imperial Government, which was unable to meet the colonies on the subject of preference had pledged Britain to the principle of an All Red route, and only impracticability would justify abandonment.
