1)Y TEIiEGIUPII—PIIESS ASSOCIATION. The Antarctic Expedition. CHRISTCHURCH, December 17. Lieut. is delighted with the news that the Government has given £I,OOO towards the Nimrod expedition. He asks that the following message be conveyed to New Zealand: --Say I lind grett difficulty in expressing my teelings. I am deeply impressed with the practical sympathy which your dominion has shown in the expedition. We are lifted from bedrock to a position in which our finances are sound and satisfactory. It is not so much the monetary gift which delights me as the manner in which the sympathy has been expressed. Ijfeel that the dominions oversea have given a lesson to the Old Country, where the apathy disj played was in marked contrast to the practical interest shown by New Zealand and Australia." Immigrants by the Fifeshire. YOUNG MEN OP FINE PHYSIQUE. AUCKLAND, December 17. The steamer Fifeshire, which arrived this morning, landed 75 immigrants for Auckland. She has 100 for Southern ports. They include a good number of young men of fine physique, and several young families. The trip was an enjoyable one. I Lionel Terry. HIS DEPORTATION PETITIONED FOR. DUNEDIN, Decemher 17. A petition seeking the release of Lionel Terry from the Seacli'f Mental Hospital and asking for his conveyance to another country is eeing prepared. Price of Bread. WELLINGTON, December 17. The Wellington master bakers will reduce the price of the twopound loaf to from January Ist, providing the price of flour does not increase in the meantime. AUCKLAND, December 17. At a meeting of master bakers, tonight, it was decided to reduce the price of the two-pound loaf to 3£d. Charrtabie Aid. WELLINGTON, December 17.
The Secretary to the Benevolent Trustees reported to the Board, today, that taking the period of eight months from April Ist to November 30th, the issue of rations had increased by 56 per cent, over the corresponding period of last year. Tnere had been a slight increase in disbursements for rent from £4ll in 1906 to £460 in 1907, but in 1905 the sum of £SOO was expended under this heading. The rents paid during the past three months had been in excess of the aggr?gate sum paid for the corresponding month? of 1905 and 1906. The tendency of outdoor relief was in the direction of increasing. Hot Weather in Christchurch. CHRISTCHURCH, December 17.. To-day was the hottest day experienced this summer, the thermometer registering 90 degrees in the shade, as aeainst 87 on Sunday last, whiclfwas the maximum for the season up to then. New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. WELLINGTON, December 17. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association decided, to-night, to send six ladies to compete at the Inter-State Tournament to be held in Sydney next March. The Association approved of the following dates and places for championship meetings and tournaments:— Hastings, December 26th and 27th; Pahiatua, January Ist and 2nd; Auckland, January Ist and 2nd; Dannevirke, January 22nd and 23rd; Napier (Hawke's Bay Provincial Championships), March 29th and 30th.
Wellington Tramway System. OPENING OF THE SEATOUN SECTION. WELLINGTON, December 17. A new section of the electric tramway connecting Seatoun, near the heads, with the city was formally opened to-day. At the Seatoun end the line goes through a tunnel, which is the widest south of the line.
