BREACH OF PROMISE CASE. BY TELEGRAPH PIiEKS ASSOCIATION. INVERCARGILL, December 12. A breacli of promise case, Jane S. Hewitson, of Lovells Flat, v. G. T. Martin, of Gure, a claim for £2OOO, has been settled out of Court by the payment of £475 damages. MAN OVERBOARD. A TRYING EXPERIENCE. AUCKLAND, December 12. When the ferry steamer Albatross was some distance up the harbour at nine o'clock last night, a cry was heard from the water. A search resulted in the discovery of a man named Simpson, stoker on H.M.S. Pegasus, floating with the assistance of a piece of wood about two feet long. Simpson, who was much exhausted, stated that he fell overboard from the warship, and had been in the water over an hour. Though a strong swimmer, he was unable to make headway against the tide. WELCOME RAIN. CHRISTCHURCH, December 12. Welcome rain fell for several hours last night, and country reports indicate that it has been fairly general over Canterbury North and South. Bright sunshine followed from dawn till 10.30, when the sky was again overcast, with a promise of more rain. The recint showers have helped both grain and grass, but a good soaking is much wanted. CONDEMNED FRUIT. AUCKLAND, December 12. Officers of the Agricultural Department are particularly active in the inspection of fruit, to prevent the introduction of dangerous pests. Early this week a consignment of 100 cases of apricots, plums and oranges from Sydney were found to be all 'more or less affected with Mediterranean fruit fl'.. Yesterday a quantity of bananas from Fiji, which were being badly eaten, was also condemned.
