LORD CURZON ON IMPERIALISM.
"IF THE COLONIES BROKE AWAY." EXISTING GOVERNING ORGANISATIONS INEFFICIENT.
Received December 12, 10.21 p.m. LONDON, December 12. Lord Curzon, speaking at Birmingham, delivered an address on Imperialism, and declared that if the colonies broke away from the Motherland they would survive and ultimately flourish, though the Empire would be weakened. If India were lost India would reel back into chaos. It was impossible for the Empire to continue to be permanently governed by the existing organisation. Some form of Imperial council or advisory body if no more, must sooner or later emerge. The defence and tariff problems and the question of whether the Empire could be made more self-con-tained and se'f-sufficing in respect of trade wore still only in the preliminary stages of evolution.
