PERSONAL.

Mr G. Fowler, of the Post Office staff at Carterton, has received notice that he is to be transferred to Kaiapoi. The death of the Rev. J. C. Anlrevv recalls to mind an amusing incident connected with him which occurred in the House of Representatives, of - he was a member. in the iate ""60's. He was a good classical scholar, and was rather prone to adorn his speeches with Greek and Latin quotations. One evening, having be?.n more liberal than usual with his quotations, another member gently "chaffed" him on the subject. Mr Hugh Carleton, member for the Bay of Islands, who followed MiAndrew in the debate then on, seemed to take copy from him, and gave the House a perfjpfc deluge of quotations, much to his bearer's disgust. From Greek and Latin Mr Carleton passed on to French. German, Italian, and Spanish. By this time the House listened open-eyed and spellbound, but when he took toll of Spanish and .Russian, to say nothing of Sanscrit, it dawned on all that he was having •a joke at Mr Andrew's expense, and the roars of laughter, in which MiAndrew joined, fairy shook the building. Mr Carleton, as a linguist, had few equals, if any, in New Zealand.

Mr J. B. Rue, who has been en- ' gaged on the mechanical staff of the •"Wairarapa Age" since its establishment, will leave, to-day, for Wellington, en route to Sydney, where he intends to remain for some time before visiting other parts of the Commonwealth and returning to New Zealand. Last evening he was the recipient of a travelling bag, suitably inscribed, from his confreres. The presentation was macje by Mr A. C. Major, who .suitably referred to Mr Rue's splendid qualities, and wished him, on bebehalf of the combined staffs, a pleasant holiday. Mrs wife of Mr A. J. Giddings, of Queen Street, sustained painful internal injuries yesterday afternoon, owing to the buggy, in which she was being driven to the opening of the new hospital, jolting while passing through the hospital •gates. She had to be assisted to her home. Last evening she was reported to be progressing favourably. Dr Frepgley, District Health Officer, is a paying an official visit to tfie Wairarapa.
