COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The County Engineer reported to the meeting of the Masterton County Council, yesterday, as follows: Opaki Riding—Opaki District road, contract No. 124. The contractor was engaged last month putting in culverts and preparing the formation for metalling. He is now making good last year's work, after the winter's heavy timber traffic. Ruamahanga River protective works, Te Ore Ore. The groin, authorised to be erected on the western bank of above river, on the way to completion. Matahim road. The widening of the dangerously narrow parts of the formation, on above road, will be completed this week. Rangitumau Riding.—Temporary surface repairs have been effected to the Kaka-amu road. This section is in a very weak state and will require the alocation augmented, to carry the winter's traffic. Northcroft's road — The culvert and embankment, on Mr W. Donovan's frontage carried away by last winter's flood have been reconstructed and repairs effected to the worst portions of the track. Te Whiti Riding. —■ Weraiti road-The bulky slips on the main length have been removed and generally the track made fit for wheel traffic. Masterton-Gladstone road— The faulty wooden culverts, south of the Makora .Stream, have been replaced by cement pipes, and their lengths.extended to give a side track clear of the metal. A side width has been graded from the borough boundary to within a few chains of the Te Whiti bridge. Upper Taueru Riding.—Glendonald bridge approaches —The contractor has reported his contract finished. Wainuioru Riding—Weraiti-Brance-peth road, contract No. 109 is only now finished, the gang having been otherwise engaged, with the carts in repairing the adjacent portion of the Weraiti road. Contract No. 110 was completed on tha 23rd ultimo and is now on maintenance. Contracts 112 and 113—On my visit of inspection on the 4th instant the contractors had some small defects to remedy before the work could be taken off their hand 1 ® Blairlogie-East Coast road— Con If,* No. 139, 67-50 chains of formation, let at last meeting, was started at the latter snd of last month; the contractor is proceeding with the formation, and stripping the quarry prcpratory to metalling. The clearing of the creek, adjacent t-> above contract, contemplated in the scheme, will be immediately undertaken by a gang of men on day labour. Contract No. .137, 192 chains of metalling—The contractors are making steady progress with the work. Contract No 140, 144 chains of metalling. Beaumont-Maungapiu section —The contract was started on the 20th ultimo. The conrtactor is making good progress, the metal used, so far, being of fair quality. Contract No. 141 —Metalling operations have not yet been started. Contract No. 125—The contractor reports that he has now the whole of the totara and ironbark timber on the ground. Blairlogie-Waihora length— Urgently required metal repairs were made last month ,on the portions of the road so badly cut up during the winter. The, annual repairs will be commencsd early in January and done in the usual way, the settlers providing teams. Masterton-Waimata road —The culvert and filling near mile peg 15 has been reconstructed. Al-fredton-Weber road, contract No. 142, supplying 1,125 cubic yards of metal. Good progress is being made, about half the metal having been delivered. The embankment and culvert at Darlington's have been reconstrur&d to admit of wheel traffic. Fcutrron tracts of 133, 76, 81, and 89 chains respectively, to cover the unm'etalled lengths between Saunder's bridge and the Waitawhiti Stream, have been advertised to close on Wednesday.
