MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

FINANCE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Finance •Committee of the Masterton County •Council was held yesterday morning. 'There were present--Crs W. J. Welch, -J. Morris, C- E. Cockburn-Hood, J. •Colquboun, and C. Kebbell. Cr Kebbell was elected chairman for »the ensuing year. The Treasurer reported as follows: —Bank, General Fund A court, dr., .£2,933 13s 4d; Lcjfil Bodies Loans Account, cr., £B4S\TTs lOd; Accounts, 'dr. balance, £1,981 2s Id; receipts for the month, £385 3s 9d. Accounts amounting to £1,208 6s 8d *were passed for payment. The Committee was unable to recommend to the Council's consideration, the offer of Mr L. (Dorsett to rent the gravel reserve at the junction ofjthe Kaka-amu and . Norlhcroft's roasd, as the Council xmay require it for its own purposes -at no distant date. The letter from the Wairarapa South County Council in connection with the proposal to erect -a new swing bridge ovel' the Waingavva] River, at Upper Fernbridge, was referred to the representatives of the Opaki Riding and the Engineer, with power to enter into - such undertaking with regard to the iproposal.as they may think fit. It was decided that the schedules » of thirds accrued to October 31 at last ■ should be referred to the representatives of the ridings in which they j respectively arise, for the purpose of • making proposals for expenditure.

Cr Welch moved, and Cr CockburnHood seconded, That the thanks of the Council be conveyed to Mr McLeod for his liberal assistance in •contributing to the up-keep of the Te .Mara-Kiriwhakapapa Road. It was decided to make application to the Minister of Finance for his provisional approval to a loan of £6,300 for metalling and bridge.buildingon the Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road. Crs Toogood and Beetham and the Engineer were empowered to arrange for the expendjgi«e of so much of the Wtraiti-Ferny&lPst Road loan of .£6.300 as it is proposed to undertake this year. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Masterton Borough Council to the condition of Nursery Road, and to request that body to proceed with the expenditure agreed upon in improving the road.

COUNCIL MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Council was held in the .afternoon, and was atlenaed by Crs W. J. Welch (chairman), C. Kebbel.', J. Colquhoun, J. Morris, A. Murray, arid C. E. Cockburn-tfood. An apology for absence was received from Mr R. F. Beetham. A letter was received from Mr H. Dunn, suggesting ihat the Tawataia Road should be put into a proper state of repair this summer and not be left until autumn, as was done Jast year.—The matter was left in the hands of the Engineer and the Councillor for the riding. Mr C. H. Savage, poundkeeper, v/rote asking to be reimbursed to the extent of 30s, being the amount of deficiency on sales of impounded stock.—The matter was left in the hands of the clerk to make further enquiries, and report at the next meeting. Messrs McMullen Bros, wrote in connection with their contract. oh the Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road, askinj the Council to do the maintenance , "< work and change same to the con- . tractors.—Th6 request was granted. A further letter was received from -•Messrs McMullen .Bros., explaining ■ that the mistake in the road-line on "the Weraiti-Fernyhurst Road was . due to the survey pegs becoming . chari'ed by bush fires. Through this . mistake the contractors had been put . to ex'ra work amounting to about £5. —The Council decided to re-imbuise . the contractors to the extent of >£s. The Council resolved to fix the day . for the shops' • half-holiday in the > County at a special meeting to be . held on the same date as the next ordinary meeting. The Roads Department notified that . £IOO was stil" available for expendi- . ture on the Alfredton-Tenui road on the £ for £ basis. Crs Kebbell and Murray were deputed to interview Mr J. Wingate with reference to raising a loan for improving the road near his property. The Engineer and Crs Harris and Welch were instructed to attend to the matter of withered branches of , gum trees falling on the road between Messrs Donald and Beetham's pro- . perties. Plans for the subdivision of Mr Jl Macara's estate at Te Ore Ore were submitted by Mr A. P. Rawson, . surveyor. Crs Morris, Harris and Welch were instructed to report cn . the plans at the next meeting.

SPECIAL MEETING. The Council, at the conclusion of the ordiplry meeting, held a special meeting/at which authority was given for the raisins of a '°an i'l,ooo for metalling the AlfredtonWeber Road. A rate of Jd in the £ was struck over a special rating area to meet interest and other charges on the loan.
