CHINESE IMMIGRANTS AMENDMENT ACT.

A PROTEST BY CHINAMEN. WELLINGTON, December 9. The Chinese of the dominion have sent a protest to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. Dr. Findlay) against the Chinese Immigrants Amendment Act, which has been reserved for the Royal Assent, and which seeks to impose an education test in English in addition to the £IOO poll tax. The petitioners urge that no exemption is provided for Chinese residents of New Zealand now visiting China, who have no facilities in the districts they are visiting tu learn to read English. Further, they urge that the Act is opposed to the wellrecognised principles of international law, and is unfriendly to the Chinese Empire. They are asking His Majesty King Edward to refuse his assent to the Act.
