CRICKET.
ENGLAND v. AN AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.
Received December 6, 5.13 p.m. BRISBANE, December 6. The cricket match, England v. an Australian eleven, began to-day. The Australians batted first, am! made 299. England has one wicket down for 61. The weather was fine and the attendance fair. The wicket was good.' Hobbs, Barnes and Jones stood out of the English team. McAlister won the toss from Fane, and sent in Hartigan and McCartney, Fielder and Blythe bowling. The score slowly mounted to 33 when Hartigan drove a ball back to Braund who had relieved Blythe, and retired. Tarrant came in, and hit Braund for a couple. Then he tapped him high to leg, and "was caught by Humphries. McAlister filled the vacancy. McCartney played good cricket and knocked up 42 when he drove Braund back, and was cau»ht by the bowler. Armstrong hit Braund for six and then was stumped by Humphries. At lunch four wickets were down for 112 runs. After lunch runs contii ued to come slowly. The first century was hoisted by McAlister cutting Fielder for 4, after an hour and three-quar-ters play. McAlister and Gregory saw the total to 137, when the latter [ went across to Blythe, who was bowling vice Crawford, and was out Ibw. Redgrave joined McAlister, and the pair added 26 runs to the score. McAlister then hit Braund up to Fielder, and retired. Hayes joined Redgrave, and the scoring became brisk. Redgrave went for the bowling, and the second century was hoisted as the result of two hours' play. Redgrave passed McAlister's score amid applause. Shortly afterwards he came before Fielder and was bowled, having hit up 66 in 47 minutes. Cotter and Hayes soon settled down. Cotter quickly ran into the twenties, and then touched Fielder to Braund in the slips. The catch was taker., but no ball was called, and the wicket j
was saved. The adjournment followed. On resuming Cotter lifted tfraund over the fence for six, and placed the next ball in Crawford's hands at deep on. Eight for 279. Evans came in and 10 runs were added. Evans then went for a short run and Hayes was run out. Saunders, the last man, made a single, when he was caught by Rhodes. The innings closed for 299. Young and Fane went in for England, Cotter bowling to Young.. The first half-hour produced 30. When the total was 24 Fane ran for a short drive, and Young hesitating was nearly run out. Run getting was not brisk. The half century was passed, and Fane was caught by Tarrant. Humphries .pined Young, and played out time. Scores AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.-First innings. The West Coast (North Island) Cricket Association is endeavouring to arrange a match with the Wairarapa Cricket Association on some date between January 23rd and February 14th. The Wairarapa Association will play a match against Wellington on the Athletic .Park, Wellington, on Christmas and Boxing days.
