SUBDIVISION OF THE BOROUGH.

PETITION BEFORE THE COUNCIL.

The following petition for the sub division of the borough into wards is now in the course of signature: — To the Mayor and Councillors of the Borough of Masterton. Gentlemen, —We, the undersigned, electors of the borough of Masterton, respectfully request that you will be pleased to take steps to divide the borough into wards in such a manner as may seem to you advisable, having due regard to community of interest of the subdivisions. } We respectfully submit that the rapid growth of Masterton renders it both necessary and N desirable, in the interests of the rattpayers, and for the more efficient control aiid management of the ever-growing and important municipal concerns of the borough, that the subdivision should be made without delay, and the number of councillors allotted to each ward should be 3uch that the total number of councillors of the borough will be increased sufficiently for the efficient and capable management of the business of the borough. We believe that a much greater interest in borough affairs will be brought about by so dividing it, and we would point out and emphasise the great advantage of making annual rates varying according to the annual requirements of the subdivisions, and also enabling the keeping of separate accounts for each ward, and additional rates levied to carry out works of a special nature and urgently required, for which the ordinary r/ites are insufficient. We would, also, respectfully urge that, as the steps to be taken will necessarily occupy a considerable period, and as it is highly desirable that the ward system should be inaugurated by .the beginning of January, no time should be lost in putting the matter in motion.
