WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
ENGINEER'S REPORT. Frorr. Our Own Correspondent. At the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council, held on Wednesday, the Engineer, Mr F. T. M. Kissel, B.Sc.E., reported as follows: — Parkvale Riding—The 'lrain on Mr Ackerman's property, Dorset road, has been cleaned out, and the culvert road leading from Mr Ackerman's on to Mr Oates' has been renewed, allowing the water which used to lie on the road here to get away. Patching has been done on Woodland's road, and the gorse and broom cleared from the council's pit on this road. The contractor expects to begin the metalling of the Kokotau flat road to-day. Tenders have been called for the metalling contracts on Kokotau hill, and on the East Taratahi road. Belvedere Riding—General repairs have been affected un the Belvedere and Hinau Gully roads and on the Mount Holdsworth road. A start has been made by Mr McPhee crushing stones for use in this riding. Aplin and Goodin's contract for widening Belvedere road, which was uncompleted last season, has now been finished. The contractor expects to make a start with the metalling on Manning's road to-day. Dalefield Riding. The culvert across Moreton road has been lowered to give more cover on the roadway, and the water race deepened below to give necessary outlet. The new metal on Hodder'Vroad has all been put out, and has since been raked in with the grader. General repairs have been made on Dalefield road, Jarvois and Waterson's roads. The contractor ' has almost completed the metalling on Waihakeke road. Before metalling the portion on Peters'road, I first had the work reformed. The contractor expected to make a start metalling Hilton road this week. The protective works at the Waiohine bridge have now been completed. Maungaraki , Riding—General repairs have been made on the AhiartJie, Pona'ahi and Longbush roads. The slips on the Eringa road have all been cleared, and the contractor has made a start opening up the pit to continue the metalling left over from last. year. The road from Kaiwhata to the East Coast has been opened up, and while the men are on this length they will put in the protective works authorised by the council in the Kaiwhata river. In this connection I would strongly urge that the two groins at each of the bad places ba put in at once, and that it should » not be left on the chance that one may do the work required. General repairs have been made on the unmetalled portions of the main road, and on the Wharau - Flat Point road. The contractor has made a start on contract 'No.. 10, metalling from Craigie-Lea towards Te Wharau. On the Tupuruprru road Hartley's formation contract is almost completed. , The bridge contractor has not made .satisfactory progress, the piles have been driven and the caps placed, but the work is now at a stand-still again owing' to his being unable to get suitable totara. Beyond the bridge Mr Buchanan's teams have ploughed the road over the easy sidlings, and these portions are now being formed by the roadman with the grader, and Mr Buchanan's team. On the Adrr.iral road men are still working on the eastern side of the hill. I have obtained the [consent of Mr Beetham | and Messrs Grace Bros, to the devia- j . tion on the top of the hill, and the j of this length will be put hand at an early date I would I suggest that the people interested in this road should be asked to make a special contribution to keep a man on this road during the winter, so as . to keep it from getting into such a bad state as it has been this year. Re roadman's cottage at Ahiaruhe: I have arr?»g:d with Mr Bunny as to the land to be included in the lease which he is giving to the council. This will include one acre round the cottage and a right-of-way from this block tp Miller's road. I have inspected the house itself, and find that though not in the best of repair, the only work necessary is a new chimney for the kitchen. There are some bricks available from the old chimney on the adjoining council section, and I should recommend that the council should replace the present old woodi and iron chimney with a brick one, and also provide some fastenings for the windows.
