THE BOWLANDS ESTATE.

PETITION FOR ACQUISITION AND SUBDIVISION. The following is the tsxt of a petition that is being largely signed in Masterton, asking the Minister of Lands to take steps to acquire the Bowlands Estate for closer settlement purposes:—"We. the undersigned residents of the Masterton county and borough, respectfully urge upon you the great ant? growing necessity of acquiring land for closer settlement in this district. We wish to point out that efforts have been made in this direction for a considerable time, but so far without result. We desire to place before you the fact that within about fifteen miles of Masterton there is an estate of 13,200 acres, admirably adapted for subdivision for closer settlement', viz., Bowlands Estate, which at the present time is looked after by a manager for an, absentee landowner, and the profits of the estate are spent out of the colony. We desire to emphasise the fact that this part of the Wairarapa has had no share in the sub-division of lands for closer settlement, and many young famers have had to leave the district to seek land for themselves elsewhere. In the vicinity of the Bowlands Estate a number of small holders will have to part with their holdings and go to other places for land unless this estate is cut up Jor settlement. Although the urgency of the need of land for settlement has been repeatedly brought under the notice of the Government by the Masterton Borough Council and by settlers in need of outlets for their families, nothing has yet been done to satisfy such need. We earnestly beg that you will be pleased to take steps to acquire the Bowlands Estate and make it available for closer settlement as early as possible."
